'We're trying to find out how life evolved in the presence of ultra-violet radiation.'
Three years ago, Konhauser and researcher Stephan Lalonde converted the light box from a standard incubator. The box is about the size of kitchen dish washer. Lalonde says its array of UV lights recreates a frightening time.
'There was no oxygen on the planet, so there was no ozone layer, nothing to filter out UV radiation from the sun. It's hard to imagine anything surviving, but we know it did.'
The light box is one-of-a-kind, and harnessing all that sunlight in a box was a learning experience.
'The UV light was actually eating through the box,' says Lalonde

According to the Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, although the temperatures last winter in Michigan were average, the snowfall of more than 70 inches was not.The National Weather Service released statistics that revealed the winter of 2007-08 saw snowfall totals well above normal. The 2007-08 season snowfalls are not only notable because of the snow amounts, the report says, but also because of the extent (or coverage) of high amounts of snowfall. The report, which was released in May, says the Detroit metropolitan area saw its fourth snowiest winter since the 1880s. The 71.7 inches missed being the second highest by just over six inches. The Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness put together a list of suggestions on its Web site for people to ensure that they have a safe winter.Home tips:Keep on hand a battery-powered flashlight, a portable radio and a radio that picks up a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather report. Also have canned or dry food, a can opener and bottled water.Make sure all members of the household have a warm coat, gloves, a hat and water-resistant boots.Be sure that there are extra blankets available as well as heavy clothes.Be aware of potential fire hazards, as well as carbon monoxide hazards, when using emergency heating sources such as fireplaces, space heaters and wood stoves.Avoid overexerting yourself.Activities such as shoveling heavy snow, pushing a car, and even walking in deep snow can cause the body to sweat, which can lead to chills or hypothermia. Also, the cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart, so those with heart conditions should exercise extra caution when out in cold weather.Car tips:Make sure that your vehicle is winterized by the end of fall which means soon.Check tire treads, top off the windshield washer solution and be sure that there is the right mix of water and antifreeze in the cooling system.Keep the fuel tank at or close to full. Low levels can lead to condensation, which can result in low fuel quality and possibly cause the fuel line to freeze. In addition, some gas stations might close if the weather gets to be too se-vere, so if there are re-ports that inclement weather is on the way, it is a good idea to fill up the gas tank.Keep a safety kit in the car in case of emergencies and make sure that it in-cludes, among other things, a flashlight, a ra-dio, extra batteries, a first- aid kit, food, water, shov-els, a cell phone and a sign to alert police or other rescue personnel if you need help.A listing of local stations NOAA broadcasts from can be found on the Web site www.weather.gov/nwr, which gives the frequen-cies of the stations and their counties.
